The route gradually ascends into increasingly dramatic mountain scenery, following paths once used by nomadic herders and caravan traders moving between Fergana and the high Pamirs.Enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding peaks before arriving at Tulpar-Kul Lake, located at the base of Lenin Peak (7,134 m), one of the most famous summits in the Pamir-Alay range. Begin the morning with a scenic hike around Tulpar-Kul Lake, offering close-up views of Lenin Peak and the Trans-Alay range. This region has historically served as a natural frontier between settled agricultural societies and nomadic mountain cultures.After the hike, cross the Kyrgyzstan–Tajikistan border and continue along the Pamir Highway, a route originally developed in the Soviet era but built upon much older trade and migration paths. The road climbs into stark, high-altitude desert landscapes before reaching Karakul Lake.Karakul, formed by a meteor impact millions of years ago, sits at approximately 3,900 metres above sea level and is one of the highest large lakes in Central Asia. Its name, meaning “Black Lake,” reflects both its deep waters and the surrounding volcanic terrain.

After breakfast, continue through the remote Eastern Pamirs, a region historically inhabited by Kyrgyz nomads and used as a seasonal grazing ground. The landscape here is often compared to a high-altitude desert plateau, shaped by wind, cold, and extreme isolation.Cross the Ak-Baital Pass (4,655 m), the highest point of the Pamir Highway and one of the most elevated road passes in the world. Travel from Alichur to Bulunkul Lake, part of a protected wetland area surrounded by some of the coldest inhabited landscapes in Central Asia. The region is known for its extreme climate, where winter temperatures can drop far below freezing, shaping a unique way of life adapted to isolation and altitude.Continue toward the Khargush area for a panoramic hike, offering sweeping views of the Pamir Mountains and the entrance to the Wakhan Corridor, a historically strategic passage that once formed part of ancient Buddhist, Islamic, and Silk Road exchange routes between Central and South Asia.After the hike, descend into the Wakhan Valley, a narrow strip of land bordered by the Pamirs and the Hindu Kush, and continue to Langar, a village known for its cultural heritage and proximity to ancient archaeological sites. Depart Langar and travel through the culturally rich Wakhan Valley along the Panj River, which forms the natural border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan. This region has witnessed centuries of trade, migration, and cultural exchange, influenced by Zoroastrian, Buddhist, and Islamic civilizations.En route, visit some of the region’s most significant historical and cultural sites, which may include ancient petroglyphs at Langar, the Buddhist stupa in Vrang (a reminder of the region’s pre-Islamic past), the strategic Yamchun Fortress overlooking the valley, the Bibi Fatima Hot Springs long associated with local healing traditions, and the cross-border village of Ishkashim, historically an important trading point.Continue to Khorog, the administrative and cultural centre of the Pamir region, established during the Russian Imperial and Soviet periods as a key regional hub.

Leave Khorog and continue west along the Panj River, following a route carved through deep gorges and steep mountain walls.
