Through the Heart of the Pamirs
This overland adventure along the Pamir Highway takes you from the historic city of Osh to Tajikistan’s capital, Dushanbe, crossing some of the highest mountain passes and most remote landscapes in Central Asia. The journey blends dramatic scenery, authentic cultural encounters, and the spirit of the ancient Silk Road.
Traveling in a comfortable 4WD vehicle, you’ll traverse high-altitude plateaus, glacial rivers, and traditional Pamiri villages where life remains deeply connected to nature. Along the way, discover the breathtaking beauty of Karakul Lake, experience the remote charm of Murghab, and explore the cultural heart of the Pamirs in Khorog.
Each day offers new panoramas — from rugged mountain passes over 4,000 meters to the lush valleys of the Wakhan Corridor along the Afghan border. Nights are spent in welcoming guesthouses and homestays, giving you the chance to enjoy local cuisine and genuine hospitality.

After breakfast, you’ll have time to explore the historic city of Osh. Visit the famous Suleiman-Too Sacred Mountain, walk through the cave museum, and enjoy panoramic views over the city from the summit. You’ll also stop by the vibrant local bazaar — one of the most authentic markets in the region. If your visit falls on a weekend, you can experience the lively animal market, offering a unique glimpse into local traditions.
After lunch, begin your scenic drive toward Tulpar-Kol Lake through the Alai and Chon-Alai valleys. Along the way, enjoy breathtaking views of the Tien Shan and Pamir-Alai mountain ranges. You will cross several picturesque passes where nomadic families spend the summer with their livestock in traditional yurts. There may be opportunities to stop, meet local herders, and taste traditional dairy products such as kymyz, ayran, and kurut. If lucky, you might even witness local celebrations or traditional horse games. Arrival at Tulpar-Kol yurt camp for dinner and overnight. BLD
In the morning, take a peaceful walk around the yurt camp and enjoy stunning sunrise views over the lakes and Lenin Peak. After breakfast, continue your journey toward Karakul Lake. Today you will cross the international border, with formalities usually taking around 30 minutes at each checkpoint.
After passing the Kyrgyz border, drive up to the Kyzyl-Art Pass, where you’ll be welcomed by dramatic mountain landscapes and your first views of Tajikistan’s Pamirs. Soon after crossing the border, you’ll arrive at Karakul — the largest lake in the Pamir region. Explore the quiet village nearby, home to around 800 residents, and enjoy a relaxing walk along the lakeshore surrounded by spectacular scenery. Overnight in a local homestay. BLD

After breakfast, leave the peaceful lakeside village and begin your drive across the vast Pamir plateau. The route offers endless panoramic views of high mountains, open valleys, and grazing yaks.
During the journey, you will cross the famous Ak-Baital Pass (4,655 m), one of the highest drivable passes in the Pamirs. Stop at the summit for photos and to admire the dramatic alpine scenery.

Arrival in Alichur in the afternoon. Accommodation in a local guesthouse
After breakfast, depart from Alichur village and begin your drive across the wide-open Pamir plateau. The area is known for its dramatic landscapes, grazing yak herds, and peaceful silence of high-altitude wilderness.
Arrival at Bulunkul — one of the coldest inhabited places in Tajikistan. The lake is surrounded by snow-capped peaks and vast open valleys, offering excellent opportunities for photography and short walks along the shore.
Nearby, you may also enjoy views of Yashilkul Lake, known for its striking turquoise color and serene atmosphere.
Panorama Hiking Experience from hargush gorge Afternoon — Drive to Langar (Wakhan Valley)
After the hike, continue driving toward Langar through mountain passes and scenic valleys. As you descend toward the Wakhan Corridor, the landscape gradually changes, revealing greener valleys and villages along the Panj River — the natural border with Afghanistan.

After breakfast, depart from Langar village, one of the most culturally rich settlements in the Wakhan Valley. Enjoy views of the Panj River and Afghan villages across the border as you drive westward.
Stop at Yamchun Fortress, an ancient stronghold perched high above the valley. A short uphill walk leads to breathtaking panoramic views of the Wakhan Corridor and Hindu Kush mountains. This is one of the most impressive historical landmarks in the region. A short drive brings you to the famous Bibi Fatima thermal springs. These natural hot waters are known for their relaxing and healing properties. Enjoy a refreshing soak while surrounded by mountain scenery. Continue to Ishkashim town, where you will stop for lunch. Ishkashim serves as a cultural and trading hub of the Wakhan Valley. Depending on the day, you may see local markets and cross-border cultural interactions. After lunch, visit Garm Chashma, one of Tajikistan’s most unique mineral hot springs, known for its natural calcium formations and crystal-clear water. Short walks around the area provide great photo opportunities.
Continue your scenic drive along the Panj River toward Khorog, the capital of the Gorno-Badakhshan region. Arrival by evening and check-in at a guesthouse or hotel.
At 8:30 depart from Khorog and drive toward the Bartang Valley, following the Panj River and turning into the Bartang Gorge. The drive takes approximately 2–3 hours and offers spectacular mountain scenery, deep canyons, and views of remote villages. You will arrive at the starting point near the Bartang River bridge, where the hiking trail begins. The hike follows a clear mountain path along the river and through scenic landscapes.

Jizev is known for its peaceful atmosphere, friendly locals, and untouched nature. Upon arrival, enjoy time to explore the village, relax by the lakes, and experience authentic Pamiri hospitality. You may meet local families and learn about their traditional lifestyle.

Morning — Hike from Jizev to the Bridge
After breakfast in a local homestay, begin your return hike from Jizev village to the Bartang Valley bridge. The walk follows a scenic trail along small lakes and rocky landscapes.

Upon arrival at the bridge, meet your driver and continue toward Kalaikhum, passing through picturesque valleys and villages along the Panj River. If your schedule aligns with market days, you may have the opportunity to visit a cross-border market where locals from both Tajikistan and Afghanistan gather.
Throughout the day, admire views of Afghan villages across the river and experience the rich cultural atmosphere of the region. Arrival in Kalaikhum for overnight stay in a homestay
After breakfast, depart Kalaikhum and follow the Panj River toward southern Tajikistan. Throughout the morning, enjoy views of Afghan villages across the river, where you can observe daily life on the opposite bank
Continue drive toward Kulob and visit the historical Hulbuk Fortress, an archaeological site dating back to the 9th–11th centuries. Explore the remains of the ancient palace complex and learn about the region’s rich Silk Road history lunch in Kulob
After lunch, drive toward the famous Nurek Dam — one of the highest dams in the world. Stop at viewpoints overlooking the turquoise reservoir and surrounding mountains, offering spectacular photo opportunities.
Arrival in Dushanbe late afternoon or evening. Transfer to your hotel or preferred location
